The Fresh Frenchie: 5 Safe Dental Care Products for Dogs

You wouldn’t let your best friend go out on a first date with bad breath, would you?

And you certainly wouldn’t want to kiss someone with bad breath!

So why would you let your Frenchie strut their stuff on the street with breath that smells like day-old garbage?

Correct answer? You wouldn’t!

Beyond just bad breath, oral hygiene for dogs prevents them from getting dental diseases, losing teeth, and having pain in their mouth.

As a responsible Firench Bulldog owner, now is the time you start freaking out and wondering if you’re doing everything you can to protect your precious pup’s mouth and teeth.

Take a deep breath. Stay Calm.

We are here to help! Below is a list of the best dog dental chews, toys, and other dental care products for your Frenchie.

So keep reading, take notes, and get ready to improve the breath of your Frenchie!

Best Dog Dental Chews

One of the best ways to keep your dog’s mouth healthy and smelling fresh is by giving them specially formulated dental chews.

These products start to work immediately and you will notice fresher smelling breath when your dog hops onto your bed for some morning kisses. Oh, is that just me who has that experience?

Dental chew brands like Greenies, Check Ups, OraVet Dental Hygiene, and Mokai dental wipes are all great options!

All of the products above are approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). Let me guess, you had no idea the VOHC was even a thing?

Me either!

But once I got started researching dental products for my Frenchie Augie I wanted to make sure that the things I was buying were going to be safe and that they would work!

The benefit of dental chews is that it does not require effort for the owner like traditional tooth brushing. It prevents bad breath, plaque buildup and generally strengthens their teeth which limits future visits to the vet for you.

The difficulty with dog dental chews is that your dog may not like every brand and there is nothing worse than trying to hold their mouth shut and make them chew like force-feeding vegetables to a toddler.

Frenchies can be fickle when it comes to what they like, but hey, it’s part of their charm!

My advice is to try one brand at a time and find out what your dog likes best. Then, buy those in bulk to save a little cash!

The Top Dog Toothpaste

Raise your hand if you had no idea you were supposed to regularly brush your dog’s teeth?

I can’t see you but I’m pretty sure most of you are sheepishly raising a hand.

It’s okay! It is not too late to start a regular tooth brushing routine.

It is recommended that you brush your dog’s teeth between two to three times per week.

Just like humans, dogs require teeth cleaning to protect their gums and teeth with the added benefit of better breath.

Much like dental chews, there are several reputable brands to choose from when it comes to toothpaste for pets.

We have already done the research, and here are the top three recommendations.

C.E.T Enzymatic Toothpaste

It comes in several flavors, but my Frenchie prefers the beef and poultry variety over the vanilla-mint.

This Vibrac Oral Hygiene Kit is also very handy and may help with the oral hygiene of your French Bulldog.

PetSmile Toothpaste

Veterinary professionals love this product and so do I. And so does my Frenchie. The toothpaste is affordable, it works to reduce bad breath, and you can feel good about the ingredients that your dog is consuming.

Pura Naturals Organic Dog Toothpaste

If an organic diet is important to you, this toothpaste contains no xylitol, chemicals, preservatives, dyes, pesticides, GMOs, gluten, fluoride, saccharin, artificial additives, sweeteners or flavors. It is latex free, SLS and SLES free, BPA and BPS free.

Also, if you are interested in going organic with your dog food check out this guide to the top organic brands.

If you are having trouble getting your pup acclimated to regular toothbrushing, you can also get their teeth professionally cleaned, but it will definitely cost more. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Dental Wipes for Your French Bulldog

I know the idea of dental wipes sounds a little weird, but trust me, these are easier than brushing their teeth and has the same benefit to the teeth and gums.

One of the essential ingredients in these wipes is baking soda which doubles to freshen breath and prevent plaque buildup that causes dental disease.

In my experience, Mokai dental wipes are the best product for a fair price. Typically I use these as a supplement to regular brushing if I’m in a hurry or Augie the Frenchie is feeling feisty.

Well & Good offers a similar dental wipe product that also contains baking soda. Bonus: You can buy in bulk (100 wipes)! I have used other Well & Good products for my dog and have been very satisfied.

If you’re having trouble with brushing or your dog has a refined palate that doesn’t take to dental chews, try out the dental wipes and see what you think!

Your Frenchie’s New Favorite Teeth Cleaning Toy – These Are Some Of The Best Dog Dental Chews

A toy and teeth cleaning all in one?! Yes, please!

If your dog likes toys you should invest in one that also cleans their teeth by scraping away plaque and gently massaging their gums.

Much like the toothpaste formula, teeth cleaning toys are infused with baking soda.

Woah! Right?

Arm and Hammer makes several varieties of dog dental toys but my personal favorite is the alligator-shaped one. It’s a great product because of its durability and effectiveness in reducing that yellowish color of dog’s teeth and bad breath.

But also, it’s just really freaking cute!

Another great option for toys is the Nylabone chew toy. For a Frenchie, you want to make sure the size of the bone is proportionate to the size of the dog. These bones are perfect for dogs up to 25 pounds which is just right for the average-sized French bulldog.

A good starter toy from Nylabone is the T-rex chew toy. It scores major points in cuteness and comes with a tasty chicken flavor. (So I’ve heard. Please don’t put these toys in your mouth!)

Toys can also support your dog’s physical and mental engagement. So, give toys a try!

The All-In-One Dental Health Kit

Are you feeling overwhelmed by all these product suggestions?

Don’t worry!

You can simplify your Frenchie’s dental health care routine by purchasing a dental health kit. This takes several products and packages them in one for convenience and peace of mind so you can spend more time snuggling your pup on the couch instead of worrying about its teeth.

Well & Good Fresh Breath Puppy Kit comes with toothpaste, a soft brush, and fresh breath spray. So, if you are lucky enough to have a Frenchie puppy or are a puppy parent-to-be consider this dental hygiene kit is formulated specifically for growing puppies.

And if you are considering buying a Frenchie puppy (which, why wouldn’t you?) check out this guide to training a French Bulldog puppy.

Bright Dental kits come with dental gel and dental sticks. All you have to do is spread some gel on the stick (which is chicken flavored, by the way) and hand it over for your pup to enjoy.

Each kit is a one-month supply and has some serious science behind it (trust me, I did the research so you don’t have to!) The gel and chew are perfectly safe for Frenchie’s and take the guesswork out of the dental routine.

You can set up a recurring shipment of the bright dental to make sure you are always prepared!

Nylabone also makes an advanced oral health kit for dogs. What I like about this kit is that it comes with a finger brush which can be easier to use than a traditional brush. And this kit comes with peanut butter flavored toothpaste, which dogs go crazy for!

So if you are interested in a kit rather than individual products, try one of these and enjoy your Frenchie’s new sparkling clean chompers!
