Is The French Bulldog the Right Dog Breed For You?

Are you considering adding a French Bulldog to your family? Well, your heart may be set on getting one of these cute little furry bat-eared dogs, but you need to know a few things before getting one to be sure that this is the right dog breed for you.  French Bulldogs are amazing but it is important to know what you are getting into so you can make a well-informed decision.

1. Can Afford a French Bulldog?

It is no secret that the price of French Bulldog is quite high as compared to other dog breeds. Due to the fact that Frenchies must be born via C-section and other factors these lovely dogs fetch a high price tag.  Not only that, their health issues may only make the whole experience more expensive.

2. can Be Around For Your French Bulldog Constantly?

French Bulldogs are known for their separation anxiety. It is not easy to train this dog to be on its own. If you cannot be around always, it may cause your French bulldog extreme distress. They may whine, bark, chew or break your belongings just to try to find you. This may also result in them getting hurt; hence if you can be around most of the time, think about getting one.

I personally own my own business and am able to bring my Frenchie to work with me, bring him along for rides in my car, and we have three kids so he is rarely left alone when he is at home with us.  He is a the perfect family dog for us!

3. Frenchies Can Live In A Small Space

The French Bulldog is a small-sized dog, which means they do not need much space, hence can easily fit into your urban lifestyle. These dogs are the best breed options for apartment living or people who don’t have a lot of space.

4. If You are Not Looking for an Active Dog

If you are an active person, then a French Bulldog is likely not the best dog for you.  French Bulldogs are not typically the type of dog you need to walk much. My Frenchie enjoys short walks and one lap around the neighborhood is plenty for his tiny little legs.  Their physical exercise limited to playing at home is enough for them. Do not expect them to walk with you for half-hour twice daily like you do for medium to large-sized dog breeds.  If you like to run or go for long hikes with your dog a French Bulldog may not be the pet for you.

5. If You Can Cope Up with Their Maintenance

French Bulldogs need you to constantly care for them as they are bad at regulating their body temperature, hence ensure the surrounding is not too hot or too cold. They are also quite clingy, which is a good thing if you want your dog to follow you around and love to snuggle with you on the couch. This also means you need to bid adieu to your personal space.  Our Frenchie is notorious for stealing blankets and hogging the bed.

6. If You Can Tolerate their Stubborn Nature

French Bulldogs can be pretty stubborn at times and really get under your skin. You will have to spend a good amount of time obedience train them. Training your French Bulldog can go a long way towards having a well-behaved dog but the breed does still tend to be stubborn by nature so prepare yourself.

7. If You Have Kids or Other Pets at Home

French Bulldogs are known to be kid-friendly, and as they are small in size, they are good pets for your kids. If you have other pets at home, such as a cat or another dog, a Frenchie will typically be comfortable being around them too.

8. If You Do Not have Allergies

While short-haired by nature, don’t be surprised to know that Frenchies do still shed.  Even though they have short coats they Frenchies still do shed.  Some people wonder if Frenchies are hypoallergenic and the short answer is No.  So if you are allergic, you should look into this.  Frenchies typically cause less of a reaction that other longer-hair dogs.

9. If You are Ready to Deal with Their Health Issues

French Bulldogs may suffer from a wide range of ailments in their life span, and you need to be careful to ward those off. Especially if they are crossbred, their health issues may escalate, which is why we highly recommend you to get pure breed French Bulldog puppies in Ohio from a reliable breeder.

They have a flat face, hence suffer from Brachycephalic syndrome. If your dog pants harder than others, do not force it to continue with physical activity and let it catch some breath.  Be sure to keep your Frenchie cool and well-hydrated to avoid heat related health issues.

10. If You are Looking to Laugh Out Loud Every day

Well, French Bulldogs are the goofiest dogs and can entertain you for hours. They are mischievous too, which you will always enjoy watching (watch out for stolen socks a favorite naughty behavior of my Frenchie). If getting stress out of your life is your motto, do get a Frenchie.
